RICE BROTHERS
OUR STORY
Tanner Rice, head instructor at Rice Brothers Academy, was born and raised in beautiful Redding – California.
Being the son of Rod Rice, a black belt and former student of John Dill, it didn’t come as a surprise that Tanner had his initiation in the sport at the young age of 6.
Rod Rice was Tanner's first teacher, awarding him his blue belt (and brown belt years later), Tanner's early jiu jitsu was also influenced by John Dill and James Boran.
As a blue belt, Tanner met and befriended Carlos Diego Ferreira who was staying in the US for a few months. Looking to expand his knowledge of Jiu Jitsu, Tanner moved t Brazil. Although Tanner was only 16 years of age and did not speak a word of Portuguese, he remained in the Amazonas capital of Manaus for 1 year, being accommodated in Carlos Diego’s house while training at his Master’s academy – the legendary Clube Pina of Master Faustino Neto.
Tanner left Brazil after 1 year but carried on making frequent trips to Manaus, spending in total around 2.5 years in that South American territory, and earning his purple belt from Carlos Diego Ferreira.
That same year the Rice family opened their own academy(2008) and Rice Brothers Jiu Jitsu was born!
